Record of the Day: A Group Called Smith

A Group Called Smith
by Smith

Today's record is "A Group Called Smith" by a group called Smith, lol, which was given to me on my birthday this year :)

Smith is an American pop/rock band with hard rock and soul-influences. They were formed in Los Angeles, California in 1969. Their first album A Group Called Smith was released on the same year, 1969, and peaked at #5 on the Billboard hot 100 on November 1, 1969. It stayed on the chart for 15 weeks.

Smith also hit the Top Ten in 1969 with their revised cover of the Shirelles' "Baby It's You" that is on this album. This song features three lead singers and a B-3 Hammond organ. This son features the voice of the bands strongest asset, Gayle McCormick.

Love her 60's look on the album cover!

"Baby it's you" was also featured in Quentin Tarantino's 2007 film, Death Proof.
